| Anime & Japanese Imagination - 16617 - HUM 200 - 17 | ||||||||||||||
|
In 2002, McGray coined the term “Gross National Cool” to account for the soft power of Japanese youth culture at home and abroad—youth culture that commanded respect in economic analyses. By this point, Japan had surprising success in both Asian and Western markets, with a renaissance of anime, manga, and games. Tourism to Japan flourished, and previously shady districts like Kabuki-cho, Akihabara, and Harajuku cleaned themselves up for international consumption. The Japanese government tried to capitalize on this through “Cool Japan” initiatives; however, the tension immediately became clear: Japan, like many nations, has an uneasy relationship with its liminal cultures. So while anime and manga were what made Japan “cool,” the “Cool Japan” initiative tried to bait and switch those interested in popular culture to appreciate traditional culture.
Regardless, popular culture emerges from the people (mass culture is top town, like a soft power strategy from the government). And since it emerges from the people, it is imbued with the ideologies of the creators and consumers. So this set of courses is to explore the foundations of Japanese popular culture—historical, spatial, temporal, cultural, and so forth. This course uses Anime as the medium through which students will engage in popular cultural studies. Students will watch anime, write essays and give presentations about themes, and engage in discussions. By the end, students will be able to write academically about a dynamic international phenomenon.
